Andersen Corp. Earns 2017 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award

BAYPORT, Minn., April 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Andersen Corporation, including its subsidiaries, has been named a 2017 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award winner, the highest honor given for continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency achievements. Andersen’s accomplishments will be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. on April 26, 2017.

An ENERGY STAR® partner since the Windows program began in 1998, Andersen is known for its long history of leadership in producing energy efficient products. Andersen was the first window manufacturer awarded the ENERGY STAR National Window Partner of the Year in 1999.

Andersen’s leadership in energy efficiency is exemplified through products that have helped set industry standards for minimizing environmental impacts while maximizing energy efficiency, performance and durability for customers.  Andersen’s dedication to promoting the ENERGY STAR program is centered on advancing energy-efficient products within its four major brands, and educating all stakeholders about the benefits of ENERGY STAR certified products and programs.

In 2016, Andersen’s top three ENERGY STAR related accomplishments included:

  1. Advancing energy efficiency ratings across the portfolio. Andersen now offers products that are ENERGY STAR® v. 6.0 certified in the Northern Climate Zone; added PassiveSun® glass and HeatLock® coating to most product lines for greater energy efficiency options; and also increased sales of Andersen® A-Series products with triple-pane glass – recognized as Most Efficient of ENERGY STAR in 2017 with specific glass options.
  2. Expansive outreach to consumers. Andersen deployed a multi-faceted campaign to educate consumers about energy efficiency benefits. Specific tactics included social media infographic, bylined articles and educational videos. Andersen also worked directly with the EPA to develop an engaging in-home ENERGY STAR® Scavenger Hunt for kids.
  3. Reducing operational energy use and increasing renewable energy. Andersen Chairman and CEO Jay Lund launched a Chairman’s Sustainability Award to recognize employees who deliver impressive environmental results. The winning site reduced its energy consumption by 20 percent through an LED lighting upgrade – helping Andersen to drive closer to an enterprise goal. Andersen also announced a subscription to up to 19 megawatts of solar energy through Xcel Energy’s Solar*Rewards Community® program.

“Andersen is honored to receive the 2017 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award,” said Sal Abbate, Senior Vice President, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Andersen Corporation. “We are committed to educating consumers about the critical importance of selecting energy-efficient windows that last. The ENERGY STAR® brand helps consumers make wise decisions about energy efficiency throughout their home.”

In 2015 alone, ENERGY STAR and its partners saved American businesses and consumers 503 billion kilowatt hours and $34 billion on their energy bills, while achieving broad emission reductions.

“The 2017 Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award reflects how Andersen employees bring to life our company value of corporate citizenship, and lead by example, reducing environmental impacts by making our operations more energy efficient,” added Eliza Clark, Director of Sustainability and Environmental, Andersen Corporation. “Lowering energy consumption is a win for all of us and the right thing to do for the environment.”

Andersen Corporation Releases 2015 Corporate Sustainability Report: Commemorating our National Park Service’s Centennial

BAYPORT, Minn.–(August 24, 2016)– Today Andersen Corporation released its fifth annual Corporate Sustainability Report (CSR): Window to a Better World. Available online, the CSR highlights several company milestones that connect Andersen’s longstanding values and commitment to sustainable practices, with forward momentum along its sustainability journey.

“In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, our 2015 CSR celebrates the importance of wild and natural resources, as well as the company’s own century-long commitment to preserving the view outside our windows,” said Jay Lund, chairman and chief executive officer at Andersen.

The 2015 CSR illustrates how the company advanced new sustainability strategies and environmental targets, as a Ceres signatory, which further supports the company’s promise to lead the window and door industry in combating climate change. Among the report’s highlights from 2015:

Sourcing Clean Energy – In 2015, Andersen signed agreements with community solar developers to subscribe to up to 19 megawatts (MV) of solar power through the Xcel Energy Solar* Rewards Community® program. Additionally, the company signed a regional Pollinator Pledge, and chose solar allies who’ve agreed to establish site management practices benefiting pollinators and other wildlife.

Transparency – Andersen was the first in its industry to publish an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). An EPD incorporates life cycle assessment data to advance product transparency, with the goal of ultimately reducing environmental impacts. The company intends to expand from this first, Renewal by Andersen double-hung window EPD, to include other product offerings.

Philanthropy – Andersen expanded its work with the Yellowstone Park Foundation in 2015, building on prior energy efficiency successes with the group. The company donated windows to the new employee dormitory in the Old Faithful area of the Park, helping the building achieve a LEED® Platinum certification.

2015 also marked the completion of St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Eco Village – 18 LEED Platinum net zero homes located in River Falls, WI.

The 2015 CSR follows the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative’s G4 in Accordance-Core option. Andersen made the transition away from a printed report to an exclusively web-based platform for the 2015 CSR.

“We are excited to transition to an online CSR this year,” said Eliza Clark, Andersen’s Director of Sustainability and Environmental. “Our goal was to build a dynamic platform that would allow us new opportunities not just to tell our story, but to meaningfully engage in a dialogue with our customers, employees and other key stakeholders.”

Housing Boom, or Bust? One Prediction for a post-Baby Boomer Market

Considering how economists have studied the impact a retiring Baby Boomer workforce will have on the country’s economic health, housing stock certainly deserves the same attention.

The Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies recently conducted an analysis of the picture painted by various indicators, and concluded that – while housing will be come more widely available as Boomers sell their family homes and eventually pass on, the next generation that follows still has its own set of distinct housing needs. From their post:

“…while the housing market does somewhat resemble a game of musical chairs, with successive age groups ‘moving up’ as their incomes and families grow, and older households exiting, this process can be inefficient for young adults moving into units vacated by baby boomers…”

The outlook indicates new housing will continue to be needed, even as existing housing stock is released back into the market.

EcoVillage

Eco Village Named Best Affordable Project by Green Builder Magazine

In its annual Green Home of the Year awards, Green Builder Magazine named Eco Village in River Falls, Wis., the Best Affordable Project for 2014. The development will be one of the first Habitat for Humanity communities to incorporate on-site renewable energy options commonly associated with more expensive communities. This includes features like photo-voltaic arrays, super-insulated walls, and existing energy efficient window technology using Andersen® 400 Series products.

Eco Village homes – single family and duplex units – are designed with sustainable building principles, including:

  • Using less water through rain/storm water harvest applications (barrels/cisterns), landscaping and gardening.
  • Achieving carbon negative, net-zero energy use, by mounting photo-voltaic panels and solar hot-water arrays on roofs, and using existing energy efficient high-performance window technology.

The project broke ground in 2012, and Andersen has been proud to support Eco Village with in-kind donations as well as employee volunteer support. Andersen volunteers have logged more than 3,120 hours at Eco Village over the past 3 years.

EcoVillage

Eco Village homes are ENERGY STAR 3.0 certified. The homes have Home Energy Rating System (HERS) scores of 33 to 39 without photovoltaic arrays and HERS scores of -5 to 14 with photovoltaics.

The development will be nearly complete by summer’s end 2015 when the last of the 18 houses are built. Plans are already underway for a second Eco Village development to break ground in Prescott, Wis., to include 35-40 homes.
